What causes redeposition?

Cotton fibers are made up of interlinking layers of tiny threads known as fibrils. As the fibers age, some fibrils come loose and protrude from the fibers. The shorter ones trap dirt particles in the air, which are then released during the wash cycle to redeposit on clothes. As these dirt particles build up over time, they make white cotton fabrics look gray, and colors appear dull.

The cellulose molecules in cotton fibers are formed of long glucose chains. It’s thought that cleaning cellulases specifically target and cut the shorter, fine fibrils into tiny sugars.

This helps break them down so they can be lifted away from the fabric, releasing trapped dirt particles to leave whites whiter and colors brighter.
